If you know what you are doing, it&#8217;s possible to catch over twenty adult steelhead a day on the good days, and still consistently catch the maximum amount of steelhead even on the slow days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catching steelhead, or any fish for that matter, comes down to knowledge. And I do what they do because they catch 90% of the fish simply because they know how! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what do top guides know or do that you should know or do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>When to fish:<\/strong> If you&#8217;re on the river on the wrong days, you&#8217;ll struggle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Where to fish:<\/strong> This means two things. Which rivers are hot, and where are the spots within the river that hold fish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gear:<\/strong> Rods, reels, lines, and waders. Use gear that makes it easier to fish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Baits and Lures:<\/strong> Know what works, when it works, and why it works. Stop listening to guys recommend crappy baits and lures online. If guides don&#8217;t use certain baits or lures, you shouldn&#8217;t either. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Setup:<\/strong> A good leader and line setup makes a huge difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fishing Methods:<\/strong> Know what methods to use, and how to do them properly. Or, pick a methods and learn to do it well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Presentation:<\/strong> If you do not present your bait or lure well, you won&#8217;t catch many fish. This is a major problem for most anglers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Approach:<\/strong> Know how to approach a spot, where to stand, and use the proper angles so you don&#8217;t spook fish and so you can get the best presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll be honest with you if you screw up one or two of these things, you drastically limit your success! Steelhead are on fire this time of year! At this time, they feed heavily, which is an advantage for anglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early fall fishing can have anglers fishing in 80F, while late fall fishing can be below freezing. The key to fishing fall steelhead in Michigan is knowing how to adapt as the water temperatures gradually get colder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in November, there is less angler pressure due to the start of the fall hunting season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Fall is hunting season for dear, so I and other anglers will wear bright orange vests, jackets, or hats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Stages Of the Fall Steelhead Runs In Michigan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason I mention this is because a steelhead in September or October in warmer water will feed, hold, and migrate differently than a steelhead in the late fall in very cold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means you need to adapt based on the conditions and understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In early fall, the steelhead will be anywhere in the river, including fast rapids and shallow runs as well as deeper pools. They will even hold in different parts of the same pool in early fall compared to late fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will also be more aggressive and feed on different baits and lures than they might later in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucky for me, as a guide who is often on the water seven days a week from late October until the rivers freeze in late December or January, I see how the steelhead fishing changes, and I&#8217;ve learned how to change tactics to catch them consistently. In early fall, the optimum time to go steelhead fishing is early morning and afternoon. But later in the fall, I start fishing later and get off the water earlier because the best fishing times change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the cold fall weather starts in late November and early December, rivers to explore when you want to fish for a steelhead, and thankfully, Michigan has lots to offer, from tiny creeks that can get decent runs of steelhead to massive steelhead rivers that anglers &#8211;<\/strong> The Pere Marquette River gets some of the earliest steelhead. Early Runs come in with the King Salmon. Lots of access by foot or drift boat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Muskegon River &#8211;<\/strong> The Muskegon River is known for summer-run steelhead that gorge on salmon eggs. Good spots include Tippy Dam and Croton Dam below Lake Muskegon. Good winter fishing river below Tippy Dam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manistee River<\/strong> &#8211; Known as the Big Manistee River, it&#8217;s a great Lake Michigan tributary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Little Manistee River<\/strong> &#8211; Known for big fish and excellent fishing for steelhead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grand River<\/strong> &#8211; gets stocked with summer steelhead. Hot spots include Grand Rapids and the sixth street dam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Betsie River<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troutandsteelhead.net\/st-joseph-river-steelhead-fishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>St. Joseph River<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; The St Joseph River is a large river that gets stocked with Skamania steelhead, and is good for smallmouth bass in the summer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Boardman River<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>White River<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troutandsteelhead.net\/kalamazoo-river-steelhead-fishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Kalamazoo River<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; A lesser-known steelhead fishery on Michigan&#8217;s lower peninsula with less angling pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The lower Au Sable River<\/strong> &#8211; One of the best Lake Huron tributaries that is also known for great resident brown trout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The St Mary River<\/strong> &#8211; One of the larger rivers in the Great Lakes Region, you can target steelhead. This is when big steelhead like this are in the river and it&#8217;s when the steelhead start taking on darker spawning colors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick is to dress in layers so that you can respond to changing situations throughout the day, especially late fall, which is late November and Early December, and is also when the river and air temps can get very cold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the water or air is cold, consider a polypropylene base layer to remain warm.
